Wynstock wins thriller in Los Alamitos Futurity (G2)
Wynstock was the longest price of Bob Baffert’s three entries in Saturday’s $200,000 Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) yet came away the winner with an incredibly determined effort in the 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-olds.
Making his first start since a 7 ½-maiden win on Oct. 15, Wynstock took the lead early on Saturday, showing the way by a length through a half-mile in :47.90. The field began to bunch up on the turn and Wynstock faced challenges on both sides coming into the stretch. Stronghold, on the inside was neck and neck with the pacesetter down the lane, with Wynstock getting the better of it in deep stretch to win by a half-length.
“He’s a stout, beautiful horse. I’m just really happy for Doc. We go back way back. To have this moment is special. He bought him and trusted me. I’m so excited.”
Wynstock is owned by Ed “Doc” Allred and Jack Liebau. A son of the Baffert-trained Solomini, Wynstock has won two of his four starts and earned $162,740.
Wynstock is one of Baffert’s record 14 Futurity winners dating back to 1997, when Real Quiet took the Hollywood Futurity (G1) before going on to Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness S. (G1) glory the following year.
