West Coast comes east to take Easy Goer S.
Gary and Mary West’s 3-year-old colt kicked off the Saturday stakes action on June 10 at Belmont Park with a dominating victory in the $150,000 Easy Goer S.
The Wests and Bob Baffert also won the 2013 running of the Easy Goer with Power Broker.
West Coast was second by a head in the Lexington S. (G3) in April at Keeneland, his only stakes start prior to Saturday. Taken off the early pace by Mike Smith, West Coast was sixth after a half-mile in :45.62. He began to inch closer going into the turn, then accelerated quickly when Smith gave him his cue with three furlongs to go.
West Coast roared to the lead at the top of the stretch and was all alone in the blink of an eye, ultimately winning by 3 3/4-lengths in 1:41.50 for the 1 1/16-miles.
“I got squeezed at the start, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise because they were going way too quick, and I might have got caught up into it,” Smith said.
West Coast is now 3-2-0 in his five starts, with winnings of $203,800.
