Usha wins three-way photo finish in Winning Colors S. (G3)
Bob Baffert’s Grade 1-winning filly added Churchill Downs’ Winning Colors S. (G3) to her career wins on Memorial Day when she out-fought Zeitlos and Foie Gras to win the six-furlong sprint by a head.
Usha came out of the gate well and was pressing Foie Gras steadily through a quarter-mile of :22.86. On the turn, Usha forged to a short lead to be up just a head at the top of the stretch. The two pacesetters were side by side for much of the stretch run, with Zeitlos closing furiously late to claim the runner-up spot.
“She was still looking around a bit down the lane,” Baffert said of the winner. “I’ve thought about putting blinkers on her, but that might make her a little too rank. I think she’ll get better with time. She’s improving and I think seven-eighths of a mile is a good distance for her. As horses get older, they can run farther as long as they relax. Today, with her not being intimidated, I thought she ran really well.”
Usha has a solid record of 4-2-3 from 10 starts and earnings of $539,870 for owners Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman. The 4-year-old filly won the La Brea S. (G1) and was third in the Derby City Distaff (G1) on Kentucky Derby day.
