Track record for Luminance in career debut
Despite a very wide trip, Kaleem Shah’s 2-year-old filly was brilliant in her debut Sunday at Del Mar, covering five furlongs in a track-record time of :57.39 en route to a 2 1/2-length maiden special weight victory.
The sparkling performance earned the Bob Baffert trainee a TDN “Rising Star” tag (VIDEO).
After several of her foes got away a few strides quicker from the gate, Martin Garcia had no choice but to take Luminance to the outside to find running room. She was about two lengths from the front going into the turn, but a bold, six-wide move carried her to the front at the top of the stretch. She asserted her dominance from that point, coming home powerfully to lower the track mark.
Luminance is the second foal out of Siren Serenade, whose siblings include George Vancouver, winner of the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) and Saarland, who took the 2001 Remsen S. (G2).
Luminance was a $320,000 buy at the 2013 Keeneland September Yearling sale.
