Total Bull all business in Fifth Season Stakes win

Friday | April 09, 2010

Bob Baffert has had a great Oaklawn Park meet, shipping four different horses to the Hot Springs, Arkansas track for stakes wins. The latest is Total Bull, who made his added money debut a winning one in the $100,000 Fifth Season S. on Apr. 8.

Earlier in the Oaklawn meet, Baffert won with Lookin At Lucky (G2 Rebel S.), Freedom Star (G3 Azeri) and Conveyance (G3 Southwest).

Total Bull went off the even-money favorite in the Fifth Season, a 1 1/16-mile event for older horses. Despite breaking a step slow in the field of six, Calvin Borel nevertheless hustled him into second spot by the time they hit the first turn. Grand Sensation led through fractions of  :47.54 and 1:12.53 for six furlongs before Total Bull, who had been second, was roused to the lead near the top of the stretch. Flying Private made a run at the eventual winner in the stretch, but came up a half-length short. The final time was 1:44 on the fast track.

Total Bull has been a model of consistency in his five lifetime starts, with three wins and a pair of seconds to date. He has been favored in all of his races. Bob Baffert trains Total Bull for owners Hal and Patti Earnhardt. The 5-year-old dark bay/brown horse made all his previous starts at Santa Anita. He has now earned $128,800 after the $60,000 payday in the Fifth Season.
