Secret Circle prevails in Dubai

Secret Circle scored his biggest victory since winning the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) with a thrilling victory in the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen Saturday at Meydan Racecourse.

The victory was especially gratifying for his trainer Bob Baffert, who scored his first victory in the race after finishing second twice in the past.

Secret Circle broke well, but squeezed back shortly after the start. Victor Espinoza deftly switched to the outside, going three wide around the turn as he assumed command. With Super Jockey bearing down in the final furlong, that pair race together to the wire, with Secret Circle just prevailing in the 1,200-meter (about six furlongs) test in 1:10.64, the quickest time thus far over the new Meydan track.

“He jumped well,” jockey Victor Espinoza said. “He swung wide with the two Hong Kong horses and he gave me a kick in the stretch. He was very brave at the finish to hang on. He’s a top class horse. All his American form proves that and he’s done the same here.”

Secret Circle, who is owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, is 8-6-1 in 15 starts and has earned $3,670,790.
