Richard’s Kid wins G1 Goodwood, gives Baffert another Classic contender

Saturday | October 02, 2010

Richard’s Kid rolled up the rail in deep stretch to take the Grade 1 Goodwood at Hollywood Park, giving trainer Bob Baffert a powerful 1-2 punch for the Nov. 6 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs.

A few hours before the Goodwood, Baffert’s 3-year-old colt Lookin At Lucky won the Indiana Derby (G2) at Hoosier Park, where Baffert was on Saturday.

Richard’s Kid scored his second consecutive Grade 1 win in the Goodwood, following his Pacific Classic triumph at Del Mar on Aug. 28. The star attraction of the Goodwood was the flashy 3-year-old Twirling Candy, who went off the 3-5 favorite. Richard’s Kid, meanwhile was dismissed at 8-1. Ridden by Alonzo Quinonez, the Baffert trainee was last of seven after a quarter-mile and moved up slightly to sixth after six furlongs. Quinonez moved up the rail coming into the stretch to take aim on the dueling Twirling Candy and Crown of Thorns. Twirling Candy gave way first, and a stubborn Crown of Thorns hung tough, but Richard’s Kid wore him down in the final strides to win by a half-length. The time for the 1 1/8-miles was 1:49.18.

Richard’s Kid is owned by Zabeel Racing International Corp., who purchased the son of Lemon Drop Kid following his sixth-place finish in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic. The 5-year-old is now 10-2-7 in 28 starts, earning  $1,866,370.
