Pretty N Cool gives Baffert first Matron S. (G2) win
Bob Baffert shipped Pretty N Cool from her southern California base to Belmont Park to take the $200,000 Matron S. (G2) on Sunday by a length.
The 2-year-old filly, who won the Sorrento S. (G2) at Del Mar in August, gave Baffert his first win in the six furlong contest.
Pretty N Cool broke sharp and had a half-length lead after a quarter mile, with horses on either side of her. Constellation continued to press the leader from the inside around the turn, and Pretty N Cool floated a little wide coming into the stretch.
Constellation continued to battle on along the rail, but Pretty N Cool was too strong late, winning by a length in 1:09.73 on a fast main track.
“We were confident,” said Baffert. “We knew going in she was doing really well and six furlongs is her distance. She has a lot of quality and ran like we thought she would. She’s pretty fast. She could have rated but [jockey Martin Garcia] just kept her where she was comfortable. She was doing it the right way and he knows her really well, which is why we had him ride her.”
Pretty N Cool is owned by Karl Watson, Michael Pegram and Paul Weitman, who also won the Speakeasy S. on Sunday at Santa Anita with Toews On Ice.
The Matron winner, a daughter of Scat Daddy, is now three-for-four lifetime and has earned $342,000.
