Plum Pretty wins Sunland Oaks by 25! lengths
Plum Pretty made the $200,000 Sunland Oaks look like a walkover with an astounding 25 length victory against an over-matched group of five 3-year-old foes at New Mexico track (VIDEO). Trainer Bob Baffert shipped his filly from southern California for her first start outside of that state.
After stalking the pace for the first half mile, Plum Pretty went to the lead on her own down the backstretch. From then on, she pulled away with jockey Martin Garcia along for the ride, finishing up the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.18.
With the victory, Plum Pretty scored her first stakes win for John Fort’s Peachtree Stable. Bred in Pennsylvania by Silent Indy Stables and DDS Stables, she cost $110,000 as a 2-year-old at the Ocala Breeders’ Sale last March.
Plum Pretty’s record now stands at 2-0-2 in four starts. She finished third in both the Santa Ynez (G2) and Las Virgenes (G1) this winter after breaking her maiden in her debut at Hollywood on Oct. 27. The $120,000 payday in the Oaks raised her earnings to $190,800.
This was Baffert’s third win in the Sunland Park Oaks, following Gabby’s Golden Gal in 2009 and Tough Tiz’s Sis in 2007.
