Mythical Power romps in Grade 3 Lone Star Derby

Monday | May 11, 2009

A week after falling just short in the Kentucky Derby with top 3-year-old Pioneerof the Nile, trainer Bob Baffert sent out fast-rising sophomore Mythical Power in the $400,000 Lone Star Derby (G3), and the son of Congaree romped to a 7 ½-length win in the 1 1/16-mile race May 9th in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Mythical Power settled in a nice stalking position early in a race that was tightly bunched throughout. Until they reached the stretch, that is. When the real running started, Mythical Power was running at a different level than the rest, surging well clear to hit the wire all alone. The final time was 1:42.79 over a fast local main track.

“Mythical Power has really improved and I think you’re going to see bigger things from this horse,” said Baffert, who was present to saddle the heavy favorite among the field of seven.

Bred and owned by Peachtree Stable, Mythical Power captured his first career stakes win and second win overall from five career starts. The improving colt has never been off the board, and Saturday he improved his earnings to $458,000. In his last start in late March, Mythical Power was second in the $900,000 Sunland Park Derby, which produced Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird.

Baffert trained Mythical Power’s multiple Grade 1-winning sire Congaree.
