Mother Mother kicked off her 2020 campaign with a victory in Sunday’s Kalookan Queen S. at Santa Anita Park, winning the 6 1/2-furlong contest by 1 1/4-lengths under Joel Rosario.

Mother Mother, a multiple Grade 1-placed 4-year-old, is 3-3-2 in 10 starts and has earned $363,061 for owners Old Bones Racing Stable, LLC, Barry Hall, Barry Lipman and Mark Mathiesen.

Facing just four foes, Mother Mother was fourth until midway on the turn, when she made a three-wide move for the leaders. Lady Ninja was stout on the front end, but Mother Mother wore her down and was under a hand ride the entire trip as she finished the distance in 1:16.20.

“Last time she was out on the lead I told Joel we took the blinkers off because she got a little rank,” winning trainer Bob Baffert said. “Joel always rides his own race and I don’t try to get in his way. I was joking, I said, ‘Did I say to take her back, I couldn’t remember?’ He said they were going a little fast early. He rode her with a lot of confidence like you’re supposed to ride a 2/5 shot.”

Mother Mother is a daughter of the recently deceased Pioneerof the Nile, who Baffert trained a pair of Grade 1 wins and over $1.6 million in earnings. According to Baffert, the dark bay filly is likely head back to graded stakes competition for her next outing.
