Midshipman wins G1 Del Mar Futurity, stamps himself as a top juvenile
The Bob Baffert-trained Midshipman showed his quality and mettle in winning the $250,000 Del Mar Futurity (G1) on September 3rd in just his second lifetime start, rallying late to defeat the best field of 2-year-olds assembled this season in California.
The win keeps the promising colt by Unbridled’s Song perfect and stamps him as the top juvenile on the West coast and one of the leading juveniles in the nation heading up to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Santa Anita this fall. The final time for seven furlongs was 1:23.35 over the local synthetic surface, and Midshipman earned an 85 Beyer Speed Figure for the performance.
“What he showed today was terrific talent,” said Baffert.
Out of the multiple graded stakes-winning Avenue of Flags mare Fleet Lady, Midshipman is a Stonerside homebred that was recently acquired by Darley and will race in the colors of Sheikh Mohammed beyond his Del Mar Futurity triumph. Now a perfect 2-for-2 with earnings of $180,000, Midshipman will be pointed for the Norfolk (G1) at Santa Anita on September 28th.
The win was also a monumental one for Baffert, giving him his eighth win in the Del Mar Futurity – a race he won a remarkable seven consecutive renewals of from 1996-2002.
