Bob Baffert sent out Lookin At Lucky, one of his two Kentucky Derby (G1) contenders, out for his final pre-race workout over a sloppy racetrack Apr. 26 at Churchill Downs. The track’s communications department released times for the 5 furlongs in 1:00 4/5 while in company (with his regular workmate Broken Tango), with splits of :12, :24 1/5, :36, and :48 1/5. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:15 1/5.
Lookin At Lucky was ridden in the work by exercise rider Dana Barnes. He was allowed to settle well back of his workmate, then ran effortlessly past Broken Tango at the top of the stretch, looking very strong as he came through the lane.
Baffert’s other Derby contender, Conveyance, is slated to work over the Louisville oval on Tuesday morning.
It’s been an eventful couple of days for Lookin At Lucky both on and off track. On Sunday he inherited a the role of Kentucky Derby morning line favorite after the unfortunate defection of Eskendereya follow that colt’s withdrawal from the race due to a minor injury. The Kentucky Derby 136 draw and official morning line will be set on Wed., Apr. 28 at approximately noon Eastern time.
