Gingham stylish in Angels Flight S. win

Saturday | June 13, 2020

Gingham got a very patient ride from Mike Smith, running down Been Studying Her late to take the Angels Flight S. Saturday afternoon at Santa Anita Park.

Gingham and Smith gave the 3-year-old filly’s trainer Bob Baffert some anxious moments in the 6 1/2-furlong contest. Bottled up on the inside most of the trip, Smith had to swing four-wide in upper stretch to find clear running room. Set down for the drive, Gingham wore down Been Studying Her and was under a hand ride as she crossed the wire a length ahead of her foe.

“Mike Smith showed a lot of confidence,” said Baffert. “You give him something to work with, he gets it done. He closes the deal.”

Prior getting her first stakes win on Saturday, Gingham was second in the Las Virgenes S. (G2). The Angels Flight was her first one-turn outing in nine career starts.

The winner is owned by Sarah Kelly and Jane Wiltz and has earned $202,200.
