Conveyance remains undefeated after Southwest score

Sunday | February 21, 2010

Conveyance continued his winning ways on Feb. 20, scoring a front-running victory in the $250,000 Southwest S.(G3) at Oaklawn Park for his fourth victory in as many starts.

Conveyance has been in front in nearly every point of call in his career, and the Southwest was no different. Going right to the front under Martin Garcia, Conveyance had a one-length lead after a swift opening quarter mile of :22.78 seconds. Several others tried to keep pace around the far turn, but Conveyance shook them off and widened as the field hit the stretch. Garcia geared him down in the final yards as he came home a winner by three parts of a length. He earned a 97 Beyer Speed Figure for the performance, one of the top 3-year-old figures for 2010.

The Southwest was originally scheduled for Feb. 13, but was delayed a week due to weather conditions. Garrett Gomez was also named to ride, but Garcia got the mount after the race was moved. Then Conveyance drew a wide post (No. 9) after the race was redrawn. Despite all this, the gray son of Indian Charlie handled everything with ease, adding yet another stakes-winning 3-year-old to Baffert’s formidable stable.

Owned by Zabeel Racing International, LLC, Conveyance raised his earnings to $254,400 and certainly punched his ticket for his next Kentucky Derby (G1) prep.  Oaklawn’s next major race for the 3-year-olds will be the $300,000 Rebel S. (G2) on Saturday, March 13.
