Just 10 days out from Kentucky Derby 136, Conveyance and Lookin At Lucky, Bob Baffert’s pair of contenders, looked razor sharp as they turned in impressive workouts at Churchill Downs on Apr. 21.
Both colts went to the track at approximately 8:30 a.m., during a period when the track is restricted to only Derby or Kentucky Oaks horses.
Southwest (G3) winner Conveyance, whose runner-up finish to Endorsement in the Sunland Derby (G2) was his only career loss, worked five furlongs in a swift :58.60, which was the best of 22 at the distance and the only work timed faster than one minute. Jockey Calvin Borel was in the saddle aboard Conveyance.
Lookin At Lucky, America’s reigning 2-year-old champion, was strong in a six-furlong work over “fast” footing in 1:12. Regular exercise rider Dana Barnes was up for the move, which was also the fastest at the distance.

The works were the second over the track for both horses since their arrival from Baffert’s Southern California base on Apr. 13.
Lookin At Lucky’s appearance on the track has, in the eyes of many observers, improved each day since he arrived and Baffert agreed with those assessments.
“When he first got here I gave him a little five-eighths (work), but we didn’t let him do much,” Baffert said. “He could have done more, but we just let him cruise through because coming off a synthetic track. But he’s really gotten stronger and stronger since he’s gotten (to Churchill Downs). He’s a really happy horse right now.”
Baffert also commented afterward on Conveyance’s work. “He went off a little fast, but he needed that,” said Baffert. “He’s the kind of horse that a work like that will sharpen him up. He’s a fast horse – he wants to get out there and get it on.”
Conveyance and Lookin At Lucky are scheduled for a final pre-Derby work either next Monday or Tuesday, Apr. 26 or 27.
