Concord Point tops big weekend in Iowa for Baffert

Tuesday | June 29, 2010

Making his two-turn debut, Concord Point lived up to his early promise with an 8 1/2-length, track record-setting performance in the $250,000 Iowa Derby (G3) at Prairie Meadows Racetrack on June 26. It was a breakout performance for Concord Point, who earned a 107 Beyer Speed Figure and becomes a serious player in the 3-year-old division heading into the second half of the year for trainer Bob Baffert. The Hall of Fame trainer also enjoyed success the night prior in the Cornhusker State, when Wynning Ride captured the Iowa Distaff on Friday.

Concord Point was making his first start outside of California, first start on dirt and first start around two turns in the local Derby. The stretchy gray son of Tapit ran to his pedigree and showed his appreciation for the 1 1/16-mile distance, drawing away easily from his competition and finishing powerfully to the wire. He stopped the clock in 1:40.37 under jockey Martin Garcia, breaking the track record by 2/5 of a second. The 107 Beyer earned marked the second fastest from a 3-year-old so far in 2010 behind only Eskendereya’s Wood Memorial.

Racing for owner Kaleem Shah, Concord Point now owns a record of 3-1-0 from five starts with earnings of $226,760. He could be pointed for a next start in the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.

For Wynning Ride, the Iowa Distaff marked the first career stakes victory for the 4-year-old daughter of Candy Ride after being Grade 1-placed at both two and three. She moved her record to 2-2-2 from seven starts with earnings of $308,108 for owner Arnold Zetcher.
