Baffert wins Sharp Cat stakes with May Day Rose

Monday | November 22, 2010

At Hollywood on Nov. 7, the Bob Baffert trained 2-year-old filly May Day Rose went gate to wire to easily win the $100,000 Sharp Cat S. The bay daughter of Rockport Harbor completed the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.39 while winning by 4 1/4-lengths. This was her first start around two turns.

In the Sharp Cat, May Day Rose laid down fast fractions of :22.99 and :46.53, but would not be caught as she pulled away from the field through the far turn and into the stretch. She earned an 81 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.

The early fractions were not lost on assistant trainer Mike Marlow, who subbed for Baffert. “That was pretty impressive. Twenty-two and change first quarter and she just kept cruising. She didn’t get too much pressure, but she was going a pretty good pace. And she was doing it easy. She’s quick, and she can carry it, that’s a good thing now. She’s a runner, we know that.”

May Day Rose broke her maiden in her second career start, a 5 1/2-furlong sprint Sept. 4 at Del Mar. She is now 2-1-0 in three starts, with earnings of $100,000.

May Day Rose is owned by Kahleem Shah, who bought the filly for $220,000 from the Bridlewood consigment at the OBS horses of racing age this past June. The filly was the top seller at the auction.

Reported in the Hollywood Park stable
notes of Nov. 11, Bob Baffert said that May Day Rose is on target
for the $250,000 Hollywood Starlet on December 11. The Grade one test
for 2-year-old fillies will be run at 1 1/16 miles on Cushion Track.
Baffert won the Starlet with Excellent Meeting in 1998 and Habibti in
2001.
