Baffert, Lookin At Lucky, Richard’s Kid all nominated for Eclipse Awards
A pair of horses trained by Bob Baffert, and the conditioner himself were all announced as finalists for 2010 Eclipse Awards by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers And Broadcasters on Jan. 6. The winners will be revealed at the 40th annual Eclipse Awards dinner ceremony on Monday evening, January 17, at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach in Miami Beach, Fla.
Richard’s Kid was nominated in the Older Male category, with Lookin At Lucky one of the 3-year-old male nominees.
Lookin At Lucky already has one Eclipse Award to his credit, winning 2-year-old championship honors in 2009. Owned by Karl Watson, Paul Weitman, and Mike Pegram, Lookin At Lucky once again competed against the best of his division all year long. He won the Preakness (G1), Haskell I. (G1), Rebel S. (G2), and Indiana Derby (G2), and was third in both the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and Santa Anita Derby (G1). He finished the year with earnings of $2,064,278.
Richard’s Kid was 3-0-2 in six starts in 2010, earning $915,000 for Zabeel Racing International Corp. His 5-year-old campaign was highlighted by a victory in the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic, a race he also won in 2009. His other wins in 2010 came in the Goodwood (G1) on Oct. 2 and the San Antonio H. (G2) on Feb. 7.
Baffert will be looking for his fourth Eclipse Award of his Hall of Fame career. He previously won in 1997, 1998, and 1999. He finished 2010 with earnings of $11,103,463, good for third place. From 501 starters, he compiled a record of 124-92-80, having 59% of his starters in the money.
