Mizumi remains undefeated with handy Iowa Oaks victory
Bob Baffert shipped Mizumi from his southern California base to Prairie Meadows for the $225,000 Iowa Oaks on Friday evening, and the 3-year-old filly came away with a 1 ¼-length win to run her record to a perfect 3-for-3.
Facing just three foes, Mizumi settled along the rail and was near the back of the field, but just two lengths from the pacesetter Knickleandime through the first half-mile. On the final turn Mizumi seemed to be struggling with the racetrack, but once she straightened for the stretch drive she found another gear and surged past Brooklyn Blonde inside the final furlong to claim the victory.
The winner, who is by Baffert’s 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify, is owned by the Baoma Corp and has earned $234,000 in her three wins, which includes the Summertime Oaks (G3) at Santa Anita Park last month.
