Mizumi dominates Summertime Oaks (G3) in stakes debut
Mizumi kicked into high gear in the final furlong of Saturday’s Summertime Oaks (G3) to win her stakes debut by four lengths for Baoma Corp. and trainer Bob Baffert.
The 3-year-old filly was making her stakes and two-turn debut after breaking her maiden on May 2 in her career unveiling. Breaking from the inside post, Mizumi held her spot along the fence while tracking just a couple of lengths off the lead for six furlongs. She switched to the outside for clear running before turning for home, then with a powerful stretch run, came home a clear winner in 1:43.41 for the 1 1/16-miles on a fast track.
“That was really impressive for a second time out,” said Baffert. “Ricky Gonzalez rode her the first time, filling in for Juan [Hernandez], but he rode her great that day. Today, second out to be stuck behind horses, Juan rode her with a lot of confidence. You could tell that she was just kicking on.”
Mizumi is by Bob Baffert’s 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify. Baffert has won the Summertime Oaks a record six times.
