Muth pulled away from his stablemate Pilot Commander to win Saturday’s $200,000 San Vicente S. (G2) by 2 ¾-lengths at Santa Anita Park.

After the first half of the seven-furlong contest, it turned into a match race between early pacesetter Pilot Commander and Muth. Muth was third early before ranging up on the turn to come alongside the early leader. Those two battled closely until midstretch, when Muth put him away and came home strongly to finish in 1:23.01 on a fast track.

“I was happy with their performance,” Bob Baffert said of his two 3-year-old colts. “I thought Muth was going to be up there early like he was at Del Mar, but the other horse (Pilot Commander) was quicker away from there. I thought he would be stalking but Juan (Hernandez, aboard Muth), he just took back and rode Muth with a lot of confidence. He knows his horse really well. I’m just glad it worked out."

Muth, who is an Eclipse Award finalist in the 2022 2-year-old colt division, is owned by Zedan Racing. His 2022 campaign included a win in the American Pharoah S. (G1), as well as seconds in both the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and Best Pal S. (G3). His record now stands at 3-2-0 in five starts, with earnings of $716,600.
