Du Jour became racing’s newest millionaire and gave Bob Baffert his second of three Graded stakes wins on Sunday with his victory in the $300,000 Frank Kilroe Mile (G1) at Santa Anita Park.
Baffert had won the Kilroe once before, in 2000 with Commitisize.
Du Jour settled well off the pace in the early stages, some eight lengths off pacesetter Goliad, who got the first half-mile in :45.75. Du Jour began to pick up the pace on the turn, and after coming off the rail to go around a horse on the turn, dived back to the inside at the top of the stretch. He burst through the opening and sprinted clear to win by two lengths in 1:33.95 on the “good” turf.
“We had a great ride,” said winning rider Flavien Prat. “The horse showed some speed then settled down nicely down the backside. You always run well fresh, and on paper it seemed like this race was going to have a good amount of pace. My job was just to make sure we were in a comfortable zone, so he was able to show his talent through the final stretch.”
Du Jour was making his first start since the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) where he was beaten just 3 ½-lengths. Owned by Baffert’s wife Jill and Debbie Lani, Du Jour is 6-3-2 in 17 starts and has earned $1,118,220. His previous stakes wins came in the American Turf (G2), Del Mar Mile (G2), and Wickerr S.
