Getaway Car was much the best in Sunday’s Best Pal S. (G3) Del Mar, galloping under the wire a 5 ½-length winner in the six-furlong contest for 2-year-old.
Getaway Car’s win, coupled with Nooni’s victory in Saturday's Sorrento S. (G3), gave Bob Baffert a sweep of the weekend’s 2-year-old stakes at the southern California oval.
With a swift break, Getaway Car was on top almost immediately and was in control of the race from then on. He opened up by 2 ½-lengths at the top of the stretch and won under restraint to stop the timer in 1:10.73 on a fast track.
“This guy's been a lot of fun,” said Baffert. “Great name and he's fast. He wasn't slowing down. He's got a beautiful stride. Just a beautiful way of doing it. He's by Curlin and Curlins usually get better with age. The good horses can get the distance."
Getaway Car has never been headed in his two victories and has now earned $135,000 for the partnership of SF Racing LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables LLC, Stonestreet Stables LLC, Dianne Bashor, Determined Stables, Robert E. Masterson, Tom J. Ryan, Waves Edge Capital LLC and Catherine Donovan.
