Muth leads Baffert 1-2 finish in American Pharoah S. (G1)

The Bob Baffert duo of Muth and Wine Me Up are both headed to the Breeders’ Cup following their 1-2 finish in Saturday’s $300,000 American Pharoah S. (G1) at Santa Anita Park.

Muth, who was making his two-turn debut following a second in the Best Pal S. (G2), came from off the pace in Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile contest. Wine Me Up led most of the way until collared by Muth in upper stretch. The duo raced as a team for about a furlong, when Muth pulled away to win by four lengths in 1:42.45 on a fast track.

"I love the way Muth settled," Baffert said. "When I saw that I thought, 'well, we'll see how good he is,' and I think (jockey) Juan (Hernandez) just helped him a lot today. It is nice when you have two nice colts. (Wine Me Up) definitely earned his way into the Breeders' Cup. We still have (Best Pal and GI Del Mar Futurity winner) Prince of Monaco, too. We just have to keep them healthy."

Muth is owned by Zedan Racing, who purchased the son of Good Magic for a sales-topping $2 million earlier this year at the OBS March 2-year-old sale.

Baffert now has a record 12 wins in the American Pharoah, which is named for his 2015 Triple Crown and Horse of the Year.
