Maximum Security up in time in San Diego H. (G2)
Sunday, July 26, 2020

Maximum Security, making his debut for the Bob Baffert barn, battled to a nose victory over Midcourt in the $150,000 San Diego H. (G2) Saturday at Del Mar, setting the 4-year-old on a path towards the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) later this year.

Off since winning the $20 million Saudi Cup (G1) in late February, Maximum Security was keen out of the gate in the 1 1/16-mile San Diego, taking the lead right away. He ceded the top spot to Midcourt going into the backstretch, falling about three lengths from the front. Switching to the outside going into the final turn, he came on even terms with Midcourt at the top of the stretch. The duo battled to the wire, with Maximum Security just edging his foe in 1:44.54 on the fast track.

“That was crazy. I knew I didn't have him really drummed up for this race, we were going to use this to get ready for the next one,” said Baffert. “But we're learning about the horse. He won today when he had every reason to get beat. He's such a fighter. I'm glad we got this over with and now he's in good shape.”

Maximum Security, who was carrying five more pounds than the runner-up, is a three-time Grade 1 winner of more than $11.8 million. He is owned by Gary and Mary West (also his breeder), Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith.
