There were mixed reactions from the Baffert camp following the post position for $2.185 million Kentucky Derby 136, which was held on Wed., Apr. 28 at Churchill Downs. Lookin At Lucky drew Post 1, while Conveyance drew Post 12.

There were a few gasps from the crowd at Kentucky Derby 136 draw when Lookin At Lucky came out with the No. 1 pill representing the rail post position. Despite the draw, Lookin At Lucky was made the 3-1 favorite in the field of 20. Garrett Gomez will be aboard to attempt to capture his first Derby victory. Lookin At Lucky will race with blinkers off following a troubled trip while third in the Santa Anita Derby (G1).

Baffert was pretty pragmatic after the draw. "He's got to break well," said Baffert, "Plan A is to break well. Plan B is we're screwed."

Conveyance fared better at the draw when he got the 12 hole, essentially in the middle of the gate. With stalking types in the filly Devil May Care to his inside and Jackson Bend to his outside, Conveyance should be able to use his speed to get a good position going into the first turn. Conveyance was made 12-1 on the morning line, the co-fourth choice by oddsmaker Mike Battaglia.

Baffert is looking for his fourth Derby victory, to add to his resume of Silver Charm in 1997, Real Quiet in 1998, and War Emblem in 2002.  All three of those horses also won the Preakness (G1).

Derby 136 is race 11 on May 1, with a scheduled post time of 6:24 p.m. Eastern Time. It will be televised live on NBC-TV from 4-7 p.m.
