Classic duo highlights Baffert BC contingent

Entries for the 35th Breeders' Cup were drawn Monday in Louisville for the Nov. 2-3 event at Churchill Downs.

Bob Baffert, the second-leading all-time trainer with 14 winners to date, has a total of eight entries, including one also-eligible, in five different races.

The Classic (G1), which is the final race on Saturday, drew a full field of 14, with two also-eligibles. Baffert's duo of McKinzie and West Coast drew posts six and seven respectively. Collected is the first horse on the also-eligible list, in post 15.

McKinzie has been nothing short of brilliant in his five starts, winning four, including most recently in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1), when he earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 107. West Coast is also on the comeback trail of sorts, having raced just once since finishing second in the Dubai World Cup (G1) in March. He finished third in the 2017 Classic.

Baffert has a powerful duo of Abel Tasman and Vale Dori (ARG) in the Distaff (G1). Abel Tasman, winner of last year's Kentucky Oaks (G1), has victories in the Odgen Phipps S. (G1) and Personal Ensign S. (G1) this year. She drew post 2 for Saturday. Vale Dori, who defeated Abel Tasman in last months Zenyatta S. (G1), drew post 8.

Marley's Freedom is riding a four-race winning streak into the Filly & Mare Sprint (G1), which drew one of the most competitive Breeders' Cup fields. It is the first Breeders' Cup race on Saturday, with a noon post. Marley's Freedom, by design, has been off since winning the Ballerina S. (G1) at Saratoga on Aug. 25.

Friday's five Breeder's Cup races are all for the 2-year-olds. Baffert will try to get his first Juvenile Turf (G1) victory with Much Better, who drew post three in the field of 14 going one mile. Much Better won his debut on the main track, then came back with a close second in the Zuma Beach S. to King of Speed, who is also entered on Friday.

Baffert will try to get his fourth Juvenile (G1) win on Friday with Game Winner, who is undefeated in three starts, including Grade 1 wins in the Del Mar Futurity and American Pharoah S. The colt was made the 8-5 morning line favorite and drew post 9 in the field of 14 2-year-olds.
